HIGH VITAMIN D LEVELS LINKED TO LOWER RISK FOR COLON CANCER A large study from Europe finds that those who had the highest levels of vitamin D in their blood were 40% less likely to develop colorectal cancer.  Researchers compared more than 1,200 people with colorectal cancer to a matched control group that did not develop colorectal cancer; those with high levels of vitamin D were less likely to be in the colorectal cancer group. Researchers found no evidence that increasing vitamin D levels beyond a mid-level range provided any further benefit, and they say the long-term consequences of boosting vitamin D are not yet known. COMBAT INJURY NOT THE LEADING CAUSE OF MEDICAL EVACUATION IN WAR ZONESLooking at the records of more than 34,000 military members who were sent to the Landstuhl medical center in Germany, the top grounds for medical evacuation was muscle or bone related injuries making up nearly a quarter of all evacuated injuries, followed by combat injuries and neurological disorders including psychiatric illness. Most of those evacuated from Iraq and Afghanistan for whatever reason don’t return, although senior officers were more likely to return to duty. [1/21 6:30P; the Lancet; Johns Hopkins]

STAIN REPELLENT CHEMICAL MAY BE LINKED TO THYROID DISEASE Researchers studied the blood levels of nearly 4000 adults, and found that individuals with the highest concentrations of perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) were more than twice as likely to have thyroid disease. PFOA is used in nonstick cookware and stain and water resistant coatings for carpets and floors --however, this study does not prove that PFOA causes thyroid disease.
